Subject pronouns
A subject pronoun replaces the subject of a sentence — the person or thing doing the action:
| Pronoun | Spanish | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | yo | I am a student. |
| You | tú / vosotros | You are very kind. |
| He | él | He is my brother. |
| She | ella | She is a doctor. |
| It | ello (cosas/animales) | It is a big dog. |
| We | nosotros/as | We are from Spain. |
| They | ellos/ellas | They are my friends. |
"I" is always capital:
In English, the pronoun I is always written with a capital letter — even in the middle of a sentence: "My mum and I are happy." Never write "my mum and i".
Object pronouns
An object pronoun replaces the object — the person or thing that receives the action:
| Pronoun | Spanish | Example |
|---|---|---|
| me | me / mí | She likes me. |
| you | te / ti / os | I can see you. |
| him | lo / le / él | I know him. |
| her | la / le / ella | He loves her. |
| it | lo / la (cosas) | I like it. |
| us | nos / nosotros | Can you help us? |
| them | los / las / ellos | I don't know them. |
Subject vs Object
| Subject pronoun (does the action) | Object pronoun (receives the action) |
|---|---|
| She calls me every day. | She calls me every day. |
| He loves football. | Football? I love it too! |
| They invited us. | They invited us. |
After verbs and prepositions → object pronoun:
Use object pronouns after verbs (see him, call her, help us) and after prepositions (with me, for them, to her). Never say "with I" or "for she" — always "with me" / "for her".
