More than 400 pages and 950 exercises

Grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading and writing, organised by CEFR level from A1 to C2. Most pages come with interactive exercises that give you feedback straight away, so you learn by doing.

Goodbye, flashcards: vocabulary you explore

Almost every vocabulary site, app and school teaches words the same way: flashcards and word lists. A word on one side, a translation on the other, memorise, repeat. It's how it has always been done. English But Better does it differently.

How it works. Open a vocabulary topic such as House, Clothes, Food or School. You don't get a list. You get a real scene: a room, a wardrobe, a table full of food. Hover over any object (or tap it on your phone) and its word appears right there, with its pronunciation in phonetic symbols. Click the object to lock it, press Listen to hear the word, or copy it. (Pronunciation audio is being added topic by topic, starting at A1.) Then move to the next object, and the next room. You explore, and every word stays attached to the thing it belongs to.

Why it's different. A flashcard shows one word on its own. Here each word lives inside a picture, next to everything around it, so you learn the word, what the thing looks like and where you would find it, all at the same time. There is no separate list to memorise. As far as we know, no other English-learning site teaches vocabulary this way.

Even for family words. Flashcards teach single words, but family vocabulary is about how people are connected, which is why learners can know dozens of words and still freeze when they have to name a relationship. The Premium Family Vocabulary tool lets you explore a real family tree: point at two people and see how they are related, and what to call that relationship.

An optional account, only if you want to see your progress

You never need an account to learn. If you want to see how you are doing on any device, you can sign in with a one-time email link or with Google. There is no password. Your dashboard shows progress bars, your stage from A1 to C2 and milestones, and you can delete your account yourself at any time.

Written for real learners

Explanations use plain language and focus on the mistakes learners actually make. The lower levels are written the way you would explain something to a friend.

Free first, Premium as an extra

The core lessons stay free. Premium adds extras: printable reading packs, the Family Vocabulary tool and 24/7 writing correction with AI (your text is not stored).

Games are a bonus, made by one person

The games are a treat after the lessons, so they are not part of your progress. The biggest project is an RPG that mixes language learning, storytelling with heroes who each have their own journey, and a real game experience. There is no studio behind it and no hired actors, directors or crew: its creator writes the code, records the voices and many of the sound effects, and creates the cinematics with AI tools, all by himself. Well-made games take years, not weeks.

Still growing, and fully independent

English But Better is a young site and new pages are added regularly. Some sections, like reading and advanced listening, are still small, and they are growing. See what was added recently on the What's new page.
