Also / Too / As well — agreeing with a positive, no inversion
The simplest way to agree with something positive. No inversion — the word order stays exactly like a normal sentence, you just add also, too, or as well.
| Position | Example |
|---|---|
| also — mid-position, before the main verb | A: "I speak French." B: "I also speak French." |
| too / as well — end of sentence | A: "I speak French." B: "I speak French too / as well." |
Either — agreeing with a negative, no inversion
The negative counterpart of also/too/as well. No inversion — normal word order, just add either at the end of the sentence.
| Original statement | Agreement |
|---|---|
| A: "I don't like coffee." | B: "I don't like it either." |
| A: "I can't swim." | B: "I can't either." |
| A: "She hasn't finished." | B: "He hasn't either." |
So + auxiliary + subject — agreeing with a positive, with inversion
Also used to agree with a positive statement, but this pattern uses inversion: the auxiliary comes before the subject, just like in a question.
A: "I love this song." B: "So do I."
| Original statement | Agreement |
|---|---|
| I am tired. | So am I. |
| She can swim. | So can he. |
| They have finished. | So have we. |
| He likes jazz. | So does she. |
| We went to the beach. | So did they. |
Neither + auxiliary + subject — agreeing with a negative, with inversion
The inversion counterpart of "either." Used to agree with a negative statement — same inversion pattern as "So", but the sentence itself is already negative, so don't add a second "not".
A: "I don't like olives." B: "Neither do I."
| Original statement | Agreement |
|---|---|
| I'm not hungry. | Neither am I. |
| She can't drive. | Neither can he. |
| They haven't arrived. | Neither have we. |
| He doesn't like spiders. | Neither does she. |
