Formal register is fully teachable at A2 — this guide uses the same kind of fixed, adaptable formulas as the email guide, just for a formal occasion.

A2 FORMAL LETTER WRITING GUIDE - Wedding Invitation

THE 6 STEPS OF A FORMAL LETTER STRUCTURE

A formal letter, just like an informal email, is built in clear sections:

  • Brainstorm
  • The Opening (El Saludo Formal): A polite, formal greeting.
  • The Reason for Writing (El Motivo): The exact sentence explaining the purpose of the letter.
  • The Core Body (El Contenido): The practical details (date/time/venue, dress code, RSVP).
  • The Closing & Call to Action (El Cierre): A polite closing statement asking for a reply.
  • The Sign-off (La Firma): A formal goodbye followed by your name.

SECTION 1: Brainstorming

Same technique as before: first you brainstorm, then you write. Never write and think at the same time.

Take a separate piece of paper and spend exactly 2 minutes writing down keywords — not full sentences.

Example of a raw brainstorm for a wedding invitation:

  • Saturday, June 14th, 4pm
  • St. Mary's Church
  • Reception after / Garden Hotel
  • Formal dress
  • RSVP by June 1st
  • Phone number to confirm
  • Parking near the church

Then filter using the same two golden rules:

Rule A: Keep the ideas that are easy to explain in English.
Rule B: Keep only the ideas that directly answer the main topic (in this case, the wedding details).

Then organize your final ideas by connecting them with linking words (AND, BUT, BECAUSE, SO) instead of writing short, separate sentences — exactly like in the informal email guide.

SECTION 2: THE OPENING

Always start a formal letter with a polite greeting followed by a comma, and start a new line.

10 Adaptable Formulas for the Opening:

  • Dear Mr. [Last Name],
  • Dear Mrs. [Last Name],
  • Dear Mr. and Mrs. [Last Name],
  • Dear Sir or Madam,
