In English, future plans are usually expressed through two main structures: the Present Continuous and Be Going To. Both refer to the future, but the difference lies strictly in how organized, prepared and externally confirmed the plan already is.
Present Continuous: Confirmed Arrangements
Use the Present Continuous only when a future plan has already been formally arranged, scheduled or coordinated with other people, institutions or services. It's not just a mental intention — there's a logistical commitment, a booking, or a fixed appointment on the calendar.
Key indicators:
- A specific date, time or place has already been agreed.
- Another person has confirmed it, or there's a booking (flights, hotels, appointments).
Both sides have talked and fixed a specific time and place.
The tickets are already bought — the event has a fixed, unchangeable logistical frame.
Going To: Intentions and Decisions
Use Going To to express a firm intention or a decision made before the moment of speaking, when the practical, external details haven't been arranged yet. The plan exists entirely in the speaker's mind.
Key indicators:
- Expresses a wish, purpose or personal goal.
- No confirmed appointment or external booking yet.
There's an internal intention to visit, but nothing has been arranged with her yet — no time or day fixed.
A personal decision or goal. The practical steps (sending CVs, booking interviews) haven't started yet.
