Host: Welcome back. Today we talk about small talk. Many of us hate it. Dr Ward, why?

Dr Ward: Because we think it must be clever. It doesn't. Small talk is just a short bridge between two people.

Host: So what is the first tip?

Dr Ward: Ask open questions. Not "Do you like your job?" but "What do you enjoy about your job?" Then people can answer with more than yes or no.

Host: Good. And the second?

Dr Ward: Listen, really listen. Many people only wait for their turn to speak.

Host: What about the weather? Is it a boring topic?

Dr Ward: Not at all. It is safe, and it connects us. But add a small personal detail: "I love this rain. It makes me want a book and a blanket."

Host: And how do you leave a conversation politely?

Dr Ward: Say something kind and honest: "It was lovely to meet you. I'm going to say hello to some friends."

Host: Have you ever failed at small talk?

Dr Ward: Of course! Once, at a party, I spoke for ten minutes to a coat stand. It didn't answer, but it was a great listener.
