Most people say they prefer sunny days. And yet, when it starts to rain, many of us feel a strange sense of relief. Why?
One reason is the sound. Scientists say that the steady noise of rain can hide other sounds, such as traffic or voices. This helps the brain to relax. Some people even use recordings of rain to sleep or study.
A second reason is the smell. When rain falls on dry ground, it produces a fresh smell called petrichor. Many people connect this smell with happy memories of childhood, like playing in puddles.
The third reason is social. On a sunny weekend, we may feel that we must go out, meet friends and do something special. A rainy day removes this pressure. We can stay at home, read a book, watch a film and feel no guilt.
Of course, not everybody loves rain. For some people, grey skies and short days make them feel tired or sad. In countries with long winters, this can become a real problem, and doctors advise spending time outside in daylight whenever possible.
So the next time it rains, notice how you feel. If you feel calm, you are not alone. If not, try a short walk when the rain stops. Nature often gives us a second chance.
